Abide with me! Fast falls the eventide.
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide!
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little
day.
Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass
away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
3.
Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word;
But as Thou dwell’st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.
4.
Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings,
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea?
Come, Friend of sinners, and thus bide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile;
And, though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee,
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

作者が死の3週間前に作った曲だそうですね。病と絶望の中で高らかに主への信頼と勝利を歌い上げた入魂の名作！！何度聞いても涙が出ます。私もこの作者のように主を賛美しつつ天に召されたいと切に願っています。 |

小学生の頃に初めて聴きました。その時は判りにくかった歌詞も、だんだん年を取るとその本当の意味が判るようになってきました。特に2番の歌詞「人生の終わりが近づき、この世の華やかさと楽しみが過ぎ去り、私の周りの全てが移ろい去っても、変わることのない主よ、共にいて下さい」は、無常観にも通じるものがあって胸を打ちます。
